THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. -- With a singles draw packed with 10 Trojans, it was bound to happen. USC's winning ways has the first all-Trojan face-off of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup all lined up for tomorrow, as sophomore Ray Sarmiento will face freshman Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Two more Trojans are in the mix, with Steve Johnson and Emilio Gomez a win away from a possible semifinal bout against one another.
In his first venture back on the collegiate courts for the Trojans, senior Steve Johnson delivered a silencing blow to first-round opponent Michael Hui of UCLA with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Seven of the 10 Trojans in the singles draw opened up with a win today, with a foursome now set up with quarterfinal slots. Johnson will go up against UCLA's fifth-seeded Nick Meister in tomorrow's quarters, while Gomez faces Baylor's #20-ranked Mate Zsiga.
Getting their first wins as Trojans today were USC newcomers Roberto Quiroz and Jordi Vives. Quiroz topped UCLA's Dennis Mkrtchian 6-1, 6-3 in the first round today before falling in the Round of 16. Vives fell in the first round of the main draw, but rebounded with a 6-3, 6-3 consolation bracket win over Stanford's Daniel Ho.
