THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. -- With all but one semifinal position taken up by Trojans today, the likelihood of a USC clean sweep at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup was good. Tomorrow, the odds are entirely in USC’s favor, with an all-Trojan singles final and two Trojan teams in the doubles title match out at the courts in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Senior teammates Steve Johnson and Daniel Nguyen are all set to tangle for the singles crown, and they’ll face off again as opponents in doubles as well when Nguyen teams up with sophomore Ray Sarmiento to clash with Johnson and his freshman teammate Yannick Hanfmann in tomorrow’s doubles final.

Semifinal bouts today had Johnson up against sophomore Emilio Gomez, while Nguyen had to take on his doubles teammate Sarmiento. Johnson delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Gomez to get into tomorrow’s final, and Nguyen topped Sarmiento 6-2, 6-2 in their semifinal tangle.

On the doubles courts, Nguyen and Sarmiento went down to the wire with teammates Gomez and Roberto Quiroz. Nguyen/Sarmiento and cousins Gomez/Quiroz battled to a tiebreaker, with the senior-sophomore combo winning out when it counted with a 9-8 (2) victory. On the other side, Hanfmann and Johnson had a non-Trojan foe to face in Baylor’s Grangeiro/Zsiga. The Trojans made short work of the Baylor pair with an 8-2 win to roll them into tomorrow’s Trojan title match.
