THIS SEASON:
Ruben Torres enters his senior season at USC... Posted an 8-3 record during the fall season, advancing to the semifinals of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic and the finals of the ITA West Regional... Fell to third-ranked Tobias Clemens in the ITA championship match, but still advanced to the ITA National Individual Championships... He and Drew Hoskins reached the doubles semifinals at the Bulldog Classic... Ranked No. 51 in the ITA preseason singles poll.
2003:
Torres had a difficult junior season, undergoing shoulder surgery in the fall and having to sit out select matches during the spring with a wrist injury... Played mainly at No. 4 singles and Nos. 2 and 3 doubles... Compiled an 11-13 overall singles record, a 10-11 mark in dual matches and a 2-2 record in the Pac-10... Went 11-6 overall in doubles with Johan Berg (7-3) and Daniel Langre (4-3)... Found his greatest success playing doubles with Johan Berg at the No. 3 position... The also pair posted a 2-1 mark in Pac-10 play, including an upset victory over then-No. 27 K.C. Corkery and James Pade of Stanford on April 4... Went 6-4 in the fall, highlighted by a 5-2 record at the ITA Regional Championships where he dropped his first match but won five consecutive in the consolation round... Named to the 2003 Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention team... A 2003 Marks Scholar-Athlete.
2002:
Torres, along with his teammates, enjoyed much success in 2002 as he helped lead the Trojans to the NCAA Championship ... Playing mainly at the No. 6 position, Torres posted the team’s best record with a 32-8 (.800) overall singles mark ... He went 22-5 in dual matches, 5-2 in Pac-10 play, 16-3 at the No. 6 position and 6-2 at the No. 5 spot ... In the fall he advanced to finals of the ITA Regional Consolation Championships and the second round of the SCTA Championship ... Won a team-best 11-straight matches to end the 2002 season ... Captured the Pac-10 Invitational Singles Championship during that span by defeating UCLA’s Alberto Francis in the final ... His streak took him into the NCAA Tournament where he won all six NCAA Tournament matches en route to the Trojans’ national title and was honored to the NCAA All-Tournament team at the No. 6 position ... In doubles he collected a 11-10 record with Teige Sullivan and a 1-0 mark with Daniel Langre ... Throughout the dual match season, he and Sullivan posted a 5-6 record at No. 2 and a 3-1 record at No. 3 ... In the NCAA Championship final, the pair captured a key victory over Georgia’s Adam Seri and Brandon Wagner, 8-4, to clinch the Trojans’ doubles point en route to the title.
2001:
After joining the team as a freshman in January, Ruben Torres played mainly at No. 5 and compiled a 16-9 overall record, 15-6 mark in dual matches and 3-4 record against Pac-10 opponents... Posted the team’s longest win streak during the regular season after winning eight straight matches from Jan. 19 through Feb. 21... Missed two matches in early April due to a wrist injury... He won his first round match over Matt Hanlin of Washington in the Pac-10 Singles Tournament, but fell in the second round... He played doubles with Parker Collins and the pair went 13-9 overall at No. 3... He also played doubles matches with Ryan Moore (2-1) and the pair upset Stanford’s sixth-ranked Scott Lipsky and David Martin... Collins and Torres fell in the first round of the Pac-10 Doubles Tournament.
PREP EXPERIENCE:
A 2000 graduate of Colegio Alejandria in Cali, Colombia... He was Colombia’s 18- and 16-and-under national champion... Served as team captain on 18-and-under team which finished fourth at the 2000 World Junior Championships... Went undefeated in the South American 18-and-under singles (6-0) and doubles (4-0) championship... Played for the Colombian Davis Cup team in 2000.
PERSONAL:
Ruben D. Torres was born on Feb. 23, 1981, in Villaricencio, Colombia... The son of Marco Torres and Nancy Duque, he has two brothers, Sebastian (17) and Mateo (13)... An international relations major who hopes to one day play Davis Cup again for his country.
