No. 25 Texas Wins Second Consecutive Big 12 Championship
Monday, 04/29/2013

NORMAN, Okla. – Third-seeded Texas (17-10) claimed the doubles point and added singles wins from Lana Groenvynck, Breaunna Addison and Aeriel Ellis, as the Longhorns defeated fifth-seeded Oklahoma State (15-7) by a 4-0 count Sunday to capture their second consecutive Big 12 Championship.
UT secures its ninth Big 12 Championship and second for eighth-year head coach Patty Fendick-McCain. Freshman Breaunna Addison was selected as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer after totaling a perfect 3-0 mark at No. 2 singles.
Texas led off by winning matches at the third and second doubles slots to claim the doubles point. At third doubles, UT’s Annat Rabinovich and Lina Padegimaite broke OSU’s Maria Alvarez and C.C. Sardinha for a 6-4 lead. The Texas tandem held serve and broke once more to emerge with an 8-4 win.
At second doubles, UT’s Ellis and Elizabeth Begley broke for a 6-5 lead over OSU’s Lorena Gheorghe and Meghan Blevins. Ellis served for the match with Texas leading 7-6, and at match point, Ellis ripped a crosscourt forehand winner to nail down the 8-6 win and clinch the doubles point for Texas. The remaining match at first doubles, which was tied at six, was suspended.
Groenvynck improved to 3-0 on the weekend with her 6-1, 6-1 win over OSU’s Karyn Guttormsen at sixth singles. Addison broke OSU’s Blevins early in the first set at second singles, and Addison went on to claim the set, 6-2. Addison cruised through the second set, 6-0 to push the Texas lead to 3-0.
Texas’ Ellis and OSU’s Rose engaged in a tight battle at first singles, where Ellis would prevail to clinch the match. Rose broke Ellis in the match’s first game, but, trailing 4-3, Ellis broke Rose, held serve and broke Rose once again to take the set, 6-4.
Rose broke Ellis again in the next set, but Ellis broke back and held serve for a 2-1 second-set lead. Ellis later broke for a 4-2 lead, and two games later, an errant Rose return on match point gave Ellis the match and the Big 12 Championship to the Longhorns. Texas led the remaining three matches, but all three were suspended, given that the Longhorns had clinched the victory.
