Univ. of Wisconsin, Whitewater Women Team News
UW-Whitewater wins four brackets at the at the Midwest ITA and Fall Classic
Tuesday, 09/29/2009

Hello all, the UWW women’s team had an incredible weekend at the ITA regional tournament this past weekend. We brought 14 players that all played singles and doubles, so it will be too difficult to give you details on each match, but I can tell you that it was probably the best overall team results we’ve ever had in total. Granted last year the individual results have never been match (Schaefer winning the ITA singles draw and Smith reaching the ITA semi-finals), but this was from top to bottom the best results.

The matches down the stretch could not have gone better as UWW won four of the brackets. Kudos go to freshman Lauren Aguilar who had her coming out party becoming a double winner winning the Fall Invite singles draw and teaming with partner Kathleen Kappel to win the Fall Invite doubles draw. Michelle Daciolas owned the other big story. Michelle typically plays #5 on her team and ended up reaching the quarterfinals (top eight finish) of the prestigious ITA singles draw. This is particularly impressive when you consider all the top teams and players from the region come to this event.

Below are the tournament highlights, then a quick breakdown of how each player did individually. Here is a link to get to the site that has all the individual match scores: http://gustavus.edu/athletics/wt/ITA/2009/scoreboard.cfm

Highlights:
ITA Midwest Regional (typically intended for teams top 4 players)
Singles draw:     Michelle Daciolas-reaches the quarterfinals of the main draw
Annie Smith gives the #1 seed her stiffest test in the round of 16
Amy Siemon goes 5-1 as she wins the consolation bracket
Doubles draw:  Schaefer/Daciolas reach the quarterfinals of the main draw
Stensvaag/Smith go 4-1 as they win the consolation bracket

Midwest Fall Invitational (typically for the rest of the team’s players)
Singles draw:     Lauren Aguilar goes 6-0 as she wins the championship
                               Sydney Divelbiss reaches the semifinals
Doubles draw:   UWW domination: 3 of the 4 semifinalists were UWW teams
                               Kasten/Kinsman lost to Martin/Divelbiss in one semi-final
Kappel/Aguilar won the other semi, then in an all UWW final
took out Martin/Divelbiss for the championship giving Aguilar the singles and doubles crowns.

Fall Classic doubles
Aguilar/Kappel: 5-0 as they took the title in the all UWW final
Martin/Divelbiss: 4-1 after beating team-mates in the semis and losing to team-mates in the final. (both very competitive exciting matches)
Kasten/Kinsman: 3-1 after winning 3 good matches lost to Martin/Divelbiss in the semis
Zhao/Foster: 1-1; played as well as I’ve seen them play. They won their first then lost their second to a tough LaX team.
