Warhawk Update-New rankings out and Alumni news
Friday, 12/18/2009

Hello Warhawk Tennis Fans, I have a few random updates about the tennis teams here at UW-Whitewater, just in-case you’ve been going through email withdrawal during our offseason!

1)      First of all rankings have recently been released for D-III tennis.  The women after a 12-0 fall season and capturing their 3rd consecutive WIAC title are ranked #6 in the Central Region and #18 in the nation!  Kalla Schaefer is ranked #13 in the Central Region in singles and is ranked with Michelle Daciolas at #14 in doubles.  After the ITA fall regionals, the men are ranked #10 in the region.  Kelvin Caiati is ranked #25 in the region in singles and with Danny Glinert is ranked #14 in doubles.  To see the entire ranking list, go to http://www.itatennis.com/AwardsAndRankings/Rankings/2009-10_NCAA_Division_III_Women_s_Rankings.htm  Each team will have a lot of chances to improve on their rankings and get another invite to the NCAA tournament as they compete in their spring seasons.  The men have their entire dual match schedule remaining and begin with a match against the UW-Badgers at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Jan 23rd at 3pm.   The women have a very difficult schedule remaining and hope to have about 15 more dual matches in the spring including the Midwest Open in April and a trip with the men to play Gustavus.  Both teams will be flying down to Hilton Head Island on March 19th for a week of challenging matches and a little bit of fun.  To see the entire spring schedules and rosters go to http://www.uwwsports.com/index.aspx?path=wten and http://www.uwwsports.com/index.aspx?tab=tennis&path=mten
2)      Two recent Alumni have had brushes with tennis greatness while teaching tennis.  Bill Stranberg is teaching tennis in China and had the opportunity to warm up Michael Chang for a senior event held where he is working (see attached photo).  Johnny Reed met Andre Agassi while at the club he works at in Los Angeles, CA.  Actually many of my former players have started teaching tennis or are in the tennis business in addition to Johnny and Bill.  Steve Klaas, David Stefanik, Jenny Woyahn, John Friar, Daniel Bickett, Kristin Chamberlain, Greg Isermann, Robin Borg, Matt Griffiths, and Ted Bradley are all now in the tennis industry!  (and to freak you all out Ross Johnson is an air traffic controller-watch out!)
3)      Finally, don’t forget to watch the Warhawk football team as they appear in a match-up of the #1 in the nation vs #2 in the NCAA D-3 championship game.  It is quite a story, as this is the fifth consecutive year that these two teams have met in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in West Salem Virginia.  In the past four championships Mt Union (OH) has won three times and UWW has won once.  My prediction is the Warhawks will narrow the advantage and win this one in the fourth quarter.  You can all watch the game as it is being carried on ESPN 2 tomorrow (Sat, Dec 19th) at 10am CST.  Don’t miss it, it’s good football!

We hope to see you at some matches this spring season, you know I’ll keep you posted!

GO WARHAWKS!!
