Monday, 03/11/2013

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois men's tennis product Ruben Gonzales can add his name to the list of former players who have seen tournament success in 2013. Gonzales recently won the ITF USA F6 Futures doubles championship in Harlingen, Texas.

"Ruben continues to grow and progress his competitive mindset and it's showing week in and week out," said Illinois men's tennis Associate Head Coach Marcos Asse. "I expect this to be a big year for him and he's certainly kicking it off the right way. We're looking forward to him returning to Champaign for some training  and body care before heading for another string of tournaments. Anyone who knows Ruben can tell you that this is a reflection of his diligence and hard work. We are all very proud of his continued success."

Gonzales paired with Chris Letcher and were the three seed in the tournament. In the semi-finals, the Illini alum defeated the one seed duo of Philip Bester/Devin Britton 7-5, 1-6 [10-7]. Then Gonzales cruised to victory in the doubles championship match when he won 6-2, 6-3 over Kevin King/Dean O'Brien.

The ITF men's circuit provides the entry level of professional tournaments enabling players to eventually reach the higher level tournaments on the ATP World Tour.
