ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second consecutive season, the No. 10-seeded University of Michigan women's tennis team is headed to the Sweet 16 after defeating No. 22 Tulsa, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon (May 15) in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines grabbed the doubles point to start the day, winning at No. 2 and No. 1 for the first marker of the day. At No. 2, seniors Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) raced out to a 4-0 lead before taking an 8-1 decision as the first match off court.
Tulsa pulled even with a win at No. 3, but Michigan's No. 1 duo of senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) finished off their match moments later (8-5), clinching the doubles point for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan continued its dominance in singles play, winning five of six first sets. Taney was first off court, winning, 6-1, 6-4, when she ran down a drop shot to force a Tulsa forehand into the net on match point. Tulsa took the next match with a straight-set win at No. 5 to climb back within a point, 2-1.
Muresan was the next Wolverine to win, grabbing a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 109 Alexandra Kichoutkin at the No. 1 position to put U-M on the brink of the team win. Freshman Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) did the honors, defeating Michelle Farley, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 to clinch the match and Michigan's trip out west.
The Wolverines will take on No. 7-seeded Miami (Fla.) on Friday (May 20) at Stanford University's Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, Calif. The match is slated for a noon PDT start.
