Teryn Ashley-Fitch
Teryn Ashley-Fitch is in her seventh season with the University of Michigan women's tennis program and was promoted to associate head coach following the 2009-10 season. Ashley-Fitch arrived in Ann Arbor after a successful professional playing career on the WTA Tour.
In her six years on the U-M coaching staff, Ashley-Fitch helped the Wolverines to an overall record of 123-39 (56-5 Big Ten Conference) and three consecutive Big Ten championships (2010, '11, '12). Michigan has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all six seasons Ashley-Fitch has been here, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Denise Muresan (2010 and 2011 singles; 2011 doubles), Brooke Bolender (2011 doubles) and Emina Bektas (2012 singles) have earned All-America honors under Ashley-Fitch.
Ashley-Fitch was honored as the 2010 ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year as the Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Michigan's final ITA national ranking has jumped from No. 28 to No. 8 since Ashley-Fitch arrived on campus.
Ashley-Fitch was a five-time ITA All-American (singles in 1998-99, doubles in 1998-2000) and a four-time All-Pac-10 Conference selection during her career at Stanford University (1996-2000). A member of the Cardinal's 1997 and `99 NCAA national championship teams, Ashley-Fitch served as a team captain during her junior and senior seasons and helped Stanford to a combined record of 115-6 (.950) throughout her career. She achieved ITA national rankings as high as No. 1 in doubles and No. 4 in singles during her career and is listed in a tie for 12th place on the school's all-time dual-match singles wins list (84-17). Ashley earned the Pac-10's indoor singles championship in 1999 and indoor doubles crown in 2000. She was a member of four Pac-10 championship teams during her collegiate career.
Ashley-Fitch was the tennis team's representative on Stanford's Cardinal Council for three years, acting as a liaison between the team and the athletic community.
Following her illustrious collegiate career, Ashley-Fitch enjoyed a five-year stint on the WTA Tour from 2001-06. Ashley-Fitch captured the doubles title at the 2003 ASB Bank Championships in addition to four singles titles and 13 doubles crowns on the ITF circuit. She holds career records of 118-103 in singles and 145-68 in doubles as a professional and has achieved career-high world rankings of No. 59 in doubles (10/27/03) and No. 95 in singles (7/5/04). Ashley-Fitch competed in both the singles and doubles main draw at all four Grand Slam events during her career, reaching the second round in singles at the 2004 Wimbledon Championships.
Ashley-Fitch served as a volunteer assistant coach at Boston College for two seasons (2003-05) while pursuing her professional career. The Eagles compiled a combined record of 26-17 during Ashley-Fitch's tenure.
Ashley-Fitch also served as a teaching pro at the Boston Sports Club and as an instructor/mentor at Tenacity, a non-profit organization for inner-city youth in Boston, Mass., in 2006.
A native of Chestnut Hill, Mass., Ashley-Fitch received a bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford in 2001. She was married to Brian Fitch on Aug. 16, 2008. She has one daughter, Abby, born on October 28, 2010.
