Trojans advance to today’s Round of 16 singles play in Tulsa.

 

USC’s top guns Robert Farah and Steve Johnson made their first moves in the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships last night with first-round singles wins to move into today’s Round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla. Although the pair was unable to combine forces for a first-round doubles win, both Trojans picked up singles wins on day one to advance.

 

The No. 3 seed in the tournament, senior Robert Farah pushed through a three-setter with Auburn’s Alex Stamchev in a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 decision that advances Farah to the Round of 16. Sophomore Steve Johnson was up against the No. 8 seeded Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State, and Johnson made quick work of his seeded opponent with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

 

On the losing end of first-round singles matches were Trojans Jaak Poldma and Matt Kecki, who had earned their places in the main draw with strong runs through qualifying rounds. Junior Poldma went up against Baylor’s Jordan Rux and fell in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Sophomore Kecki had to square off against the tournament No. 2 seed John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee and fell 6-1, 3-0 by default.
