Pulsfort Paves Way for Gamecocks at Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina junior Johannes Pulsfort collected a pair of wins at the South Carolina Fall Invitational this weekend to claim the Flight 2 Singles title. Pulsfort pounded out a straight-set win over No. 72 Simon Childs of Louisville to open the tournament on Friday then showed heart and emotion in a Saturday win over Auburn's Alex Stamchev. South Carolina freshman Harry Menzies finished second in Flight 5 Singles after going 1-1 on the weekend.
In a tournament that included Auburn, Louisville and North Carolina, the Gamecocks struggled with injuries and conditions throughout the weekend. Players were slotted out of position after senior Diego Cubas pulled out of his singles matches on Saturday and Sunday. Menzies similarly was forced out of action on Sunday.
Cubas and sophomore Ivan Machado split a pair of doubles matches in the tournament as the nation's No. 9 team opened the tournament with a 9-8 (3) victory over No. 10 Austen Childs and Simon Childs of Louisville on Friday. In Saturday's action, the Gamecock duo struggled with its service games in an 8-4 loss to No. 21 Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev of Auburn.
Senior Ivan Cressoni gutted out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Auburn's Nick Maurillo in Flight 2 Singles, while Machado made his mark with a 6-2, 7-5 win over North Carolina's Cameron Ahari. Menzies picked up his victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Auburn's Michel Monteiro.
South Carolina has a few weeks off before heading to the Auburn Fall Classic, which begins on Fri., Nov. 20.
