Young Trojan pair is the top seed in the doubles draw over in Westwood.
After a rainout yesterday, the USC men's doubles duo of sophomore Emilio Gomez and freshman Yannick Hanfmann got down to business today at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. Two wins today by the young Trojans push the pair into the semifinals tomorrow.
Gomez/Hanfmann opened the day's doubles play with an 8-5 win over UC San Diego team Souza/West to take a spot in the quarterfinals. There, the Trojans topped UC Santa Barbara's Bouillin/Recknagel with an 8-6 win to send the top-seeded Trojans to the semis. The USC tandem takes on Concordia's Hagemann/Santarelli in a noon semifinal bout tomorrow in Westwood.
Also in Westwood today, Hanfmann's singles run was tripped up in the semifinals by UCLA's Clay Thompson. The host beat out the top-seeded Trojan freshman with a 6-3, 6-2 decision today in singles play. Meanwhile, in doubles, USC's freshman pair of Eric Johnson and Jonny Wang picked up a Round of 16 win with an 8-4 decision over UC Santa Barbara's Glenn/Johnson to move into the quarters against the No. 2 seeds. Bruins Brigham/Thompson beat the Trojan pair with an 8-5 win.
Back in New York, USC's Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento wrapped up their East Coast tour in the consolation quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships. Both Trojans were upended in today's quarters, as Sarmiento took a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Washington's Kyle McMorrow and Nguyen fell in a three-setter to Georgia's Sadio Doumbia 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.
