#16 Florida Southern tops Wingate 7-2 Saturday
Sunday, 02/21/2010
Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team picked up two victories Saturday, but number 16 Florida Southern College did not drop another set as the Moccasins collected a 7-2 victory at the WU Tennis Complex. FSC is 5-0 overall, while Wingate is 3-3 overall.
The Mocs had not lost a singles or doubles match this season, so the two losses were their first of the 2009-10 campaign. At the number two doubles flight, Wingate sophomore Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) and senior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) defeated FSC freshman Andrea Arguello (Lakeland, Fla.) and junior Veronika Kovacikova (Pretoria, South Africa) 8-6.
In the number six singles match, Bulldog sophomore Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) defeated FSC junior Amanda Carns (Orlando, Fla.) 6-1, 6-2. The Mocs lost only three games in the other five singles matches.
Wingate hosts Limestone College Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a big NCAA Division II Southeast Region match. The Sunshine State Conference-member Florida Southern Moccasins continue their North Carolina tour Sunday morning, visiting Mars Hill College for a 10 a.m. match.
