Bulldogs earn bookend 7-2 victories over Catawba in SAC action Tuesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University tennis teams claimed bookend 7-2 South Atlantic Conference victories over Catawba College Tuesday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The Bulldog women remain undefeated in league play as a result.
Wingate women 7, Catawba 2
Wingate junior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) celebrated her birthday in style, leading the Bulldogs to the conference victory. With the triumph, Wingate is 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Catawba is 9-10 overall and 2-2 in the SAC.
Stasikelis defeated Catawba junior Kasia Zielinski (Erie, Pa.) 6-1, 6-1 in the number one singles flight. The All-SAC performer opened the festivities by teaming with freshman Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) to earn one of three doubles victories for the hosts. The dynamic Bulldog duo defeated Zielinski and junior Vanessa Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) 8-1 at the number one doubles flight.
Silva and sophomore Steffi Cook (Alpharetta, Ga.) both earned singles victories for the visiting Indians. Both matches went three sets. Silva outlasted Ferguson 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Cook edged Wingate senior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) 6-3, 6-7 (3) and 6-3.

Wingate men 7, Catawba 2
After a huge victory over number 24 Anderson Monday, the Bulldogs showed no signs of a letdown Tuesday against their SAC rivals. Wingate swept the six singles matches to earn the come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs are 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. Catawba is 12-6 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.
Catawba started the match by exhibiting strong doubles play, picking up the wins at the number one doubles and number two doubles flights. Wingate did not lose another set the rest of the day.
Bulldog sophomores Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) and Drew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) earned two victories each for the hosts. In the number three doubles match, the classmates teamed to defeat Catawba senior Cyle Petersen (Campbell River, B.C.) and sophomore Corey Eldridge (Sewell, N.J.) 8-4.
In singles, Lichtenstein defeated Catawba sophomore Uri Yarkoni (Kelowna, B.C.) 6-2, 6-3 at the number two flight. Owen topped sophomore Thomas Mitchell (Nanaimo, B.C.) 6-2, 6-2 in the number three singles match.
Both Wingate teams will make the journey to Tennessee this weekend for two SAC matches. The Bulldogs will face the Tusculum College Pioneers Friday at 2 p.m. Wingate will visit Carson-Newman College Saturday at 11 a.m. Catawba will flip-flop, as the Indians face Carson-Newman Friday and Tusculum Saturday.
