Wingate blanks Lenoir-Rhyne 9-0 Tuesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team lost only seven games en route to a 9-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University Tuesday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The match was the SAC opener for the defending regular season and tournament champion Bulldogs.
Wingate improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs play Columbus State Tuesday in Milledgeville, Ga. First serve for the neutral site regional match is 2 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne is 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the SAC. The L-R Bears visit Mount Olive Sunday for a 12 noon encounter.
On the courts, four Bulldogs won two matches each. Wingate sophomore Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and freshman Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) won an 8-2 decision at the number one doubles flight. Evers defeated L-R senior Emily Mauser (Hickory, N.C.) 6-2, 6-2 in the number one singles match. Thomas blanked Bear junior Kelsey Love (Port Orange, Fla.) 6-0, 6-0 in the number two singles contest.
Wingate sophomore Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the number three singles flight. Earlier in the day, Poole teamed with freshman Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) to claim an 8-0 victory in the number two doubles match. Williams and Wingate earned a default victory at the number six singles flight. Wingate’s fourth double-winner was junior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.).
A Capital One Academic All-America® candidate, Ferguson paired with senior Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) to claim an 8-0 triumph in the number three doubles contest. Ferguson defeated L-R sophomore Amanda Young (Claremont, N.C.) 6-0, 6-0 in the number five singles match.
The Wingate University women’s tennis team donned red ribbons Tuesday, showing solidarity with freshman teammate Sarah Martin (Chardon, Ohio). Martin is a 2011 graduate of Chardon High School, site of Monday’s tragic shooting.
