Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University tennis teams split an NCAA Division II twin bill with North Georgia College and State University Thursday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The Bulldog women collected an 8-1 victory, while the Saints claimed a 6-3 triumph on the men’s side.

Wingate dropped only one singles set, sweeping six victories in six flights. Bulldog sophomore Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) rallied from to take a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph over NGCSU freshman Natalia Escobar. The Saints only victory came in the number one doubles match as Escobar and senior Juliana Moscoso Chiong claimed an 8-4 number one doubles victory over Evers and freshman Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.).

Wingate sophomore Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over NGCSU sophomore Audrey Marlette. Earlier in the day, Poole teamed with freshman Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) to score a point in number two doubles. Both Olivia Poole and classmate Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won two matches each Thursday.

In the men’s match, North Georgia swept the doubles en route to the regional victory. Wingate senior Drew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Saint sophomore Mateus Camasmie in the number two singles match. Wingate freshmen Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) and Josh Eardley (Newcastle, Staffordshire, England) picked up straight-set triumphs at the number four and number six singles flights, respectively.

Wingate will host Lincoln Memorial University Saturday at 1 p.m. In conjunction with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Bulldogs will host Campus Kids’ Day. The event is designed to expose more junior players (and their parents and coaches) to college tennis varsity team matches.
