 Cid Carvalho
Cid Carvalho is in his 23rd season with the Winthrop tennis program and his 22nd as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams. A 1981 Winthrop graduate, Carvalho received a degree in physical education before earning his master’s degree in 1989. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Carvalho has posted a combined men’s and women’s record of 518-309. He has enjoyed a high level of success guiding the women’s program to 10 Big South Conference championships and three runners-up finishes, and the men’s program to four titles and seven runners-up spots. The women participated in the NCAA National Tournament in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and the men in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He has been voted Big South Conference women’s Coach of the Year nine times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002 2003, and 2004), and men’s Coach of the Year three times (1997,2002 and 2004). Carvalho was awarded the title of "High Performance Coach" by the USTA’s Player Development Program in 2000. He has many years of teaching experience and has served as tennis director of the City of Rock Hill from 1983 through 1997. He is a member of the U.S. Professional Tennis Registry, the South Carolina Professional Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association. He is a past member of the NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committee where he served for eight years. As a college player, Carvalho held the top flight for Winthrop. He has also been ranked in the top spot in doubles and mixed doubles in South Carolina. Carvalho and his wife Sherri are the parents of a son, Joseph, who graduated from the University of the South, and a daughter, Gabriela, who plays tennis there.
