Ohio State Career 2003-04 (Sophomore) Mertens compiled his best season yet with a 32-9 overall singles record … had a 23-6 singles mark in duals action at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 positions … was 16-3 at the No. 5 spot … tied at the No. 11 spot in program history for season singles wins with 32 … went 9-2 against conference opponents in singles … had an 8-match win streak in the core of the Big Ten season Feb. 22 through April 10 … clinched Ohio State’s first Top 10 win after he defeated Vanderbilt’s Lewis Smith Feb. 13 … won 4-of-5 matches in postseason play including one win at the Big Ten championship and three during Ohio State’s NCAA tournament run … had wins over NCAA opponents from South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia … was 12-5 in duals competition with partner Brenton Contini … was 7-4 against Big Ten opponents with Contini … had a 16-6 mark at the No. 3 doubles spot …  academic All-Big Ten selection … OSU scholar-athlete.
