The Barton tennis squads overcame a little wind to beat Seward County 9-0 on the mens' side, and 7-2 on the women's side.

At men's No. 1 doubles, Raphael Namias and Ataide Suca won 8-2. Roman Mendoza and Petr Grigorev beat their No. 2 doubles opponent 8-5. Alejandro Vazquez and Marc Weigelt completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

It took Namias three sets to win at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 5-7, 13-11. Suca beat his No. 2 opponent 6-0, 7-5. Mendoza made easy work at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Grigorev battled back to win 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. Weigelt won the No. 5 match 6-3. 7-5, and Vazquez won at No. 6 6-1, 6-0.

"I was really pleased with the way the team played despite of the wind condition," said Cougar coach Sydney Bwalya. "I was impressed with our doubles. They were the strength of our team. More importantly, I was proud of our team playing one spot above what they normally do and were still able to dominate the Saints."

Ghezelen Doballah and Calisia Reid won No. 1 doubles 8-6. Shea Schmidt and Julie Mermis beat the No. 2 doubles team 8-5. Melissa McVey and Brittany Osborne battled for a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.

Doballah swept her No. 1 singles opponent 6-3, 6-2. Reid picked up a three-set win at No. 2, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. At No. 3, Schmidt won 7-5, 6-3. Julie Mermis dropped her No. 4 match 6-1, 6-3, and Brittany Osborne fell 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 5 match. Ashley Clanton beat her No. 6 opponent 6-3, 6-4.

"We were really nervous in doubles, not moving our feet, and we were not able to keep more than two balls in play," Bwalya said. "But we settled down after the first three of four games and took care of business. We really learned a lot playing in the wind."

The men improve to 4-0, and the women 2-2.
