Four Jackets Advance at ITA Regional Championships Thursday Tech will be represented by eight players in the main draw

ATHENS, Ga. - Junior Miguel Muguruza picked up his eighth win of the season as four Yellow Jackets moved out of the qualifying round at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships Thursday evening in Athens, Ga.

 

Muguruza moves onto Friday’s main draw after defeating Florida State’s Owen Long in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Wesley Chapel, Fla. native picked up a team-leading eighth win on the day.

 

Also moving on through the qualifier was senior Austin Roebuck, junior Ryan Smith and freshman Magin Ortiga.

 

Smith’s victory came as a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Florida Atlantic’s Georg Matschke, Ortiga’s a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Mercer’s David Barton, and Roebuck’s a 6-3, 6-2 win over Christopher Swanteson of Stetson.

 

All four Tech netters will play at 9:30 a.m. Friday, joining teammates Dean O’Brien, Guillermo Gomez, Eliot Potvin and Juan Spir.

 

Junior Doug Kenny was unable to move on through the round, after dropping a tough 4-6, 4-6 match to Georgia State’s Matthijs Verdam.
