ATLANTA - After a day of upsets on Saturday, the four top seeds
remaining in the main singles draw held serve on the third day of
competition of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championship at the Bill
Moore Tennis Center.
In the first set of quarterfinal matches in singles, Georgia's Nadja
Gilchrist, the tournament's seventh-seed, swept Diana Nakic of Georgia
State 6-2, 6-3 to earn a spot in tomorrow's semis. There, she will take
on fourth-seed Noemie Scharle of Florida State, who won a hard fought,
three-set affair (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) against teammate and fifth-seed Kaite
Rybakova.
Sixth-seeded Allie Will of Florida knocked off Lauren McCreless of
Florida State 6-1, 7-5 to punch her ticket to the semifinals, where she
will face second-seed Laura Vallverdu of Miami, who was a 6-2, 6-1
winner over Florida's Claire Bartlett.
In doubles action, the team of Vallverdu and Gabriella Meija of Miami
will take on South Florida's tandem of Melissa Koning and Irene
Rehberger in the main doubles draw finals tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Both teams were two-time winners on the day, as the team of Vallverdu
and Meija knocked the top-seeded team from Florida out of the
competition in the semifinals.
In the consolation singles bracket, Georgia Tech's Hillary Davis earned
a spot in tomorrow's semifinals with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over Maria
Vallasciani of Florida International. Davis will take on Rehberger in
the semi's, with the winner advancing to the finals to take on USF's
Ecaterina Vasenina.
Monday's schedule, which begins at 9 a.m., includes the main doubles
draw finals, the main singles draw semifinals and finals and the
consolation singles draw semifinals and finals.
