King in round of 16 Friday, doubles pair in quarterfinals
Flushing, N.Y. – Kevin King dispatched Vasko Mladenov of St. John’s, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to win his first-round singles match Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, while he and Juan Spir also advanced in the doubles draw, 8-4, over Columbia’s Nathaniel Gery and Winston Lin.
King, the 85th-ranked collegiate singles player in the nation, qualified for the 32-player national draw by winning the Southeast Regional championship last weekend. He and Spir are in the doubles draw by virtue of being the nation’s top-ranked doubles team.
King will face either top-ranked Alex Domijan (No. 2 seed) of Virginia or No. 49 Chris Mengel of Duke in the round of 16 Friday. In doubles, King and Spir will have a quarterfinal match against Billy Federhofer and Nassim Slilam of Florida, who are ranked 36th in the nation.
