King drops quarterfinal singles march, King/Spir fall in dpubles quarters
Flushing, N.Y. – Georgia Tech’s Kevin King and Juan Spir bowed out of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Friday, King dropping a three-set match in the singles quarterfinals, while King and Spir fell in the doubles quarterfinals.
In the singles draw, King easily dispatched Nebraska’s Christopher Aumueller in the round of 16 Friday, 6-3, 6-1. But the senior from Peachtree City, Ga., couldn’t hold a one-set lead in the quarters against Illinois’ Dennis Nevolo, the eighth seed. He won the first set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker, but Nevolo prevailed, 6-3, 6-4, in the next two sets to advance.
King and Spir dropped a tight doubles match, 9-7, to Florida’s Billy Federhofer and Nassim Slilam.
Meanwhile, Tech went 1-1 in doubles and lost two singles matches Friday at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga. Dusan Miljevic and Eduardo Segura Mandarino defeated Victor Valente andThomas Cook of Georgia State, 9-8 (2), before losing to Alex DiValerio and Joe Dorn of Vanderbilt, 9-7, in the round-robin event. Valente took out Miljevic, 6-4, 6-0, in singles, and Cook defeated Segura Mandarino, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bulldog Scramble continues Saturday.
