DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Kennesaw State men's tennis team completed its Florida road trip with an even 1-1 record after cruising past Bethune Cookman, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
"Injuries kept us from playing our normal line-up but the guys stepped up big and played great today," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Brandon Padgett. "This was a great way to finish the week."
The Owls (4-6, 0-1) won two of three doubles matches to grab the early lead as Tyler Mills and Michael Langel took an extended 9-7 match at No. 1 and Andrew Suesserman and Simon Janik teamed up for a 9-8 (4) win at No.2.
Ryan Bouttell won his fourth-straight match and Lawrence Washington returned from injury to lead the Owls to their fourth win of the season. Bouttell won 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 after moving up a spot in the lineup to No. 5, while Washington earned a straight-set 7-6, 6-1 victory over Vassilev at No. 1.
Denis Sergeychik saw his first action as an Owl on Wednesday, coming away with a win in the process. The sophomore from Russia won 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6 for his first collegiate win. Tyler Mills tallied KSU's fifth point, earning a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Owls will next compete at 10 a.m. on Saturday against Atlantic Sun Conference rival East Tennessee State.
