Lehigh to battle two in-state foes this weekend
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a season-opening 6-1 win over Drexel last weekend the Lehigh men’s tennis team returns to the court for two matches this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will travel to face a tough Penn State squad on Saturday before returning home to host Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday afternoon in the Lewis Tennis Center.
The Mountain Hawks won two of three doubles matches and five singles matches to slay the Dragons last Saturday. Four Lehigh players: seniors Matt Savran and Andrew Krentz, sophomore Ben Gilman and freshman Jeremy Kochman, posted wins in both doubles and singles to give Wouter Hendrix a victory in his head coaching debut. Sophomore Mitchell Petersen rebounded from a doubles loss to earn a key victory at No. 2 singles as well.
Lehigh’s weekend begins Saturday evening at Penn State as the Mountain Hawks will face a 2-4 Nittany Lion squad that has been busy in this spring season. Last weekend, the Nittany Lions went 1-2 at a tournament at Wake Forest, defeating New Mexico 6-1 while losing to Alabama and the host Demon Deacons. Penn State opened its spring schedule two weeks ago, with a pair of 4-3 losses to North Carolina State and Cornell and a 7-0 win over Cleveland State. The Nittany Lions will host Penn prior to Saturday evening’s matchup with the Mountain Hawks.
Penn State leads the all-time series 24-19 against Lehigh. The teams are meeting for the seventh consecutive season, with the Nittany Lions winning the last six meetings, all but one by 7-0 scores.
On Sunday, Lehigh hosts a Saint Francis (Pa.) team looking for its first win of the season. The Red Flash are 0-3 with losses to Navy, Niagara and St. Bonaventure and will head to Bucknell on Saturday before visiting Lehigh Sunday afternoon.
Lehigh defeated Saint Francis 5-2 last year at the Lewis Tennis Center.
Action begins Saturday when Lehigh visits Penn State for a 5 p.m. match, while Sunday’s match between the Mountain Hawks and Red Flash is set for 2 p.m.
