Camp General Info -  Michigan State University Tennis Camp

The beautiful Michigan State University campus has one of the best collegiate tennis facilities in the country.  Set in the friendly college town of East Lansing, MSU features a massive 28 outdoor court complex lit for night play and one of the nation's best indoor tennis facilities.  The multi million dollar MSU Indoor Tennis Center features 8 courts for play in any weather. Directing the camp will be both Michigan State Spartan Head Men's and Women's Coaches.

The combined talents of the staff give athletes an edge as the directors at MSU take pride in the improved play, health, fitness, and enjoyment of tennis that its campers leave with after experiencing NIKE Tennis Camp at MSU. 

The MSU NIKE Tennis Camp staff is comprised of experienced and caring tennis professionals providing one of the nation's highest quality educational experiences for campers.  Extra staff are also hired to ensure the care and well being of campers off court in the dorms. Enjoyment and safety are our priorities.

 
Camp Objectives

Young athletes work best and learn the most in an environment that is personal and has the flexibility to tailor instruction to address individual needs. Michigan State University Tennis camp uses small group instruction combined with individual attention to form the cornerstone of camp curriculum. Court time includes a variety of activities designed to keep campers motivated while they improve fundamentals. Skill work and discussions are balanced with match play, offering each player the opportunity to work on tactics and employ the mental prepartion skills they are learning. This camp is not operated as a clinic where campers stay overnight; a variety of fun social and reacreational activities planned for off-court times give campers a chance to get to know each other, the counselors and coaches, and to form long-lasting friendships.

Curriculum

A typical day includes six hours of on-court instruction followed by your choice of two more hours of instruction or evening activities. No students will be forced to play beyond their limits or go home feeling that they have not played enough tennis.

Sample Schedule:
  • Wake up and get a great breakfast in the Cafeteria.
  • Spend the morning on the courts doing drills and getting personal instruction.
  • Lunch, you'll have lots to choose from each day in the Cafeteria.
  • Free time: digest your lunch and hang out with other campers and counselors.
  • Court time, drills and instruction.
  • Dinner, another great meal in the Cafeteria.
  • Court time, match play.
  • Social and recreational activities with the coaches and counselors.

Activities

Our evenings are reserved for fun activities with an occasional lecture or court session if needed. Campers enjoy the opportunity to relax and socialize as a group. Evening events include games, trips to the student activity center on campus, movie rentals, campus tours, a dance, and a trip to nearby ice cream. An off-campus activity such as a movie may be an evening option for a nominal fee. More information will be available at check-in. Campers are fully supervised at all times.
 
Off Court
 
In addition to tennis instruction, the camp will feature fitness, sport psychology, and video analysis.  Campers reside in the university's comfortable residence halls and eat their meals in the dining facility, all located conveniently across the street from the courts. At the end of a day filled with tennis, campers may participate in exciting off-court activities such as basketball, bowling, swimming, movies, field sports, a dance combining all of MSU's sports camps.

Day Camp

Day campers are welcome for any of the camp sessions. Our day begins at 8:30 a.m., ends at 5:00 p.m. and includes lunch. Please drop off and pick up promptly.

Housing

Roommate requests will try to be accomodated but are not guaranteed. If a roommate is not requested, we will assign one of approximately the same age. The dorm is configured with double and single rooms. Campers are grouped by age on the hall. Preference for doubles is given to younger campers.Air-conditioned rooms may be given on a first come first serve basis.

Early Arrivals/Late Departures

Michigan State University Tennis Camp will try their best to accomodate early arrivals and late departures.

Key Deposit

A room key deposit is required prior to camp commencement and will be returned at check-out time. Charges will be assessed for lost keys.
