Successful First Day For MSU Men’s Tennis In New York
Friday, 11/09/2012

Flushing, N.Y. - Mississippi State had a great first day Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, advancing its singles and doubles entries into Friday play with victories.

In singles, freshman Romain Bogaerts, a native of Huppaye, Belgium, climbed back from a first set loss to push Southeastern Conference foe Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt into a third set. Lipman pushed Bogaerts into a tiebreaker in the final set, but the MSU freshman wasted no time in the breaker, defeating Lipman and taking the first-round match 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(2).

In doubles Thursday, State's 41st-ranked tandem of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp grinded out an impressive round of 16 victory (after a first-round bye), defeating Armstrong Atlantic State's Dan Regan and Georgi Rumenov 9-8(5).

Bogaerts will face No. 5-ranked and seventh-seeded Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss in the round of 16 Friday. It will be a rematch of the championship match in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships in October, which Scholtz claimed in a tight 7-5, 6-4 decision.

Angus and Stropp will face the tourney's top-seeded and 24th-ranked duo of Daniel Cochrane and Andreas Mies in quarterfinal play Friday.
