MSU's Angus/Stropp Advance To NCAA Doubles Round Of 16
Thursday, 06/13/2013

URBANA, Ill. – Day two of the 2013 NCAA Individual Championships saw a Mississippi State men’s tennis doubles squad advance to the Round of 16, but also saw its final singles representative fall.

The 13th-ranked Bulldog duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp moved on to the Round of 16 with a straight-sets victory after having their match delayed due to inclement weather. Angus and Stropp squared off against North Carolina State’s No. 18-ranked tandem of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber, who pushed the MSU duo to a first set tiebreaker. However, the Bulldog pair claimed the breaker 7-6(5) and cruised in the second, earning a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory.

The win sets up a Round of 16 matchup Friday against Virginia’s fourth-ranked and fourth-seeded tandem of Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger. Saturday's match is set to begin at approxiamately 2:30 p.m. CT. Should Angus and Stropp earn a Round of 16 victory, they would earn All-American status for the 2012-13 season.

Before taking part in doubles Thursday, Stropp, ranked No. 57 in singles play by the ITA, battled Ohio State’s 12th-ranked and 9-16 seeded Blaz Rola in a second-round singles matchup. However, the Buckeye junior defeated Stropp 6-1, 6-4, ending MSU’s run in the singles bracket. Stropp, who earned All-SEC Second Team honors, finishes the season 22-13 in singles while making his first career appearance in the NCAA Singles field.
