National Champs Take Over No. 1 ITA Ranking
Friday, 02/16/2018

North Carolina takes over the No. 1 slot in the latest Oracle ITA College Tennis Division I Women's National Team Rankings, released on Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Tar Heels won the 2018 ITA Division I National Women's Team Indoor Championship on Monday, the third indoor national title in program history.

UNC had finished runner-up each of the last two seasons, but a 4-2 victory over Pepperdine in the title match in Madison, Wisconsin, gave the program three titles in six years joining the 2013 and 2015 squads as national champions.

Sophomore Sara Daavettila was named ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday after her strong performance at the ITA Indoors. The Williamston, Michigan, native posted a 4-0 record in singles playing both at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Daavettila paired up with teammate Alle Stanford for three wins.

North Carolina (10-0) jumps right back to action by hosting No. 14 Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Tar Heels open ACC play at home against NC State on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and then host a blockbuster match against No. 3 Vanderbilt on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
