SAN FRANCISCO – Hugh Clarke and David Sofaer of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team both earned singles wins today at the Battle in the Bay Classic. They both continue quarterfinal action tomorrow on the courts of the California Tennis Club.
After eliminating the top seed yesterday in the first round, Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) earned another win to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw. The senior earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Cal’s Ahmed Ismail.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) defeated Maxime Olivan, who played No. 1 singles for Saint Mary’s last season, in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw.
In doubles, Clarke and Sofaer are one of eight pairs left standing. The duo was supposed to compete with top seeded Clarke Spinosa and Patrick Pohlmann of San Diego, but won by default.
Action at the Battle in the Bay Classic continues tomorrow and runs through Sunday.
