SAN FRANCISCO – Hugh Clarke and David Sofaer won the doubles title at the Battle in the Bay Classic today on the courts of the California Tennis Club. It was the first time Clarke and Sofaer had teamed up in competition together.
Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) and Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Learning HS) defeated teams from Pacific, San Diego and USC before facing Walker Kehrer and Robert Stineman of Stanford. The Waves won by a score of 8-5
Clarke’s also reached the finals of the singles bracket. The senior opened the tournament with four-straight wins, including a victory over the tournament’s top seed in the first round.
In the finals he faced Emilio Gomez, who was seeded #2 in the bracket and ranked #66 in the Campbell’s/ITA collegiate singles rankings. Clarke suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Gomez -- his first set back off the season.
In the singles consolation final, Sofaer won the first set 7-6 against Thai Tu of San Francisco. Tu came back with a 6-4 win in the second frame and rode the momentum to a 10-6 win the tiebreaking set.
Clarke, Sofaer, and the rest of the Waves return to the court on Oct. 20-24 when they host the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
