SAN DIEGO – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team continued play at the USTA/ITA Div. I Women’s Southwest Regional Championship today at the Barnes Tennis Center. Top seeded doubles pair of Ale Granillo and Khunpak Issara are one of 16 duos left in the bracket after a winning today in their second-round match.
Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre), who are ranked #14 in the Campbell’s/ITA collegiate doubles rankings, defeated Long Beach State’s Laura Bernard and Rachel Manasse by a score of 8-4.
Tomorrow they’ll battle with Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA for a quarterfinals berth.
In singles, Issara grinded out a three-set win over Kristina Smith before bowing out in the next round.
Granillo suffered a similar fate, first winning a tight three-set match before losing in the follow up contest. Her round-three victory came against #60-ranked Kaitlyn Christian of USC.
Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) went toe-to-toe with Pam Montez, who is ranked #45 and is the tournament’s #3 seed. Montez escaped with a 7-5 win in the first frame, but Guillermo continued to play hard in the second set and pushed the Bruin all the way to a 6-6 tie. Ultimately, Montez won 7-4 in the tiebreaker to advance.
Granillo and Issara resume tomorrow with two rounds of doubles action.
