BERKELEY, Calif. – The #41-ranked Pepperdine women’s tennis team’s season came to an end today in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. California, ranked #9 by the ITA, issued the Waves a 4-0 loss.

Pepperdine, who won the West Coast Conference regular season title, concludes the 2012 dual season with a 16-9 record.

The Golden Bears (19-6) won the doubles point, but not without a fight. Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) and Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS/UCLA) went game-for-game with Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting. The Cal duo, ranked #5 in the ITA doubles rankings, earned a late break however and won 8-6 to clinch the point.

Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) rebounded from an 0-4 deficit to come back within two games but were unable to play out the match once the doubles point had been decided.

Guillermo and Issara finish the year with a 20-3 record in duals. That winning percentage (.870) ranks ninth in Pepperdine’s single-season record book, while the win total of 20 ranks fifth.

California, boasting five ranked players in its lineup, controlled the pace in singles and earned wins from courts two, three and six. Colffer was the only Wave to win a set, posting a 6-4 decision versus #48 Tayler Davis. The opposing players were tied at 1-all in the second frame when the Golden Bears clinched the team victory.

Although the team’s season is over, Issara and Guillermo continue on and will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship beginning May 23 in Athens, Ga.
