The Saint Joe Women's team moved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in GLVC play by sweeping conference foes
University of Indianapolis and
Southern Indiana over the weekend.
On Friday the Lady-Pumas handed #9 ranked
Indianapolis a 6-3 loss. The match was much closer that the
final score as it came down to the last two remaining singles matches on court. The
Pumas fell down 2-1 after the doubles competition and had to rally with singles play. With the Pumas up 4-3 overall, #2 singles player Heather Esker (Fr., Effingham Il.,St. Anthony) pulled-out a marathon 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win for the clinching point.
On Saturday the Lady-Pumas faced #10 ranked Southern Indiana. The match was moved into the Hansen Rec Center due to rain, where both coaches agreed it would be stopped after either team reached 5 total points. It didn't take the Pumas long as they won the first 5 matches and walked away with a 5-0 win. The Pumas benefited from a much stronger doubles performance and strong play from #1 singles player Katee Sanderson (Fr., Wheatfield IN., Michigan City) who moved to 3-0 in GLVC singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 trouncing of USI's Grechen Cantell.
In men's play the Pumas Dropped to 5-10 (0-3 GLVC) with back to back losses to Indianapolis and Southern Indiana. The lone point on the weekend came from #1 singles player Ishan Gohil(Jr. Kokomo In.,Taylor) who defeated Indianapolis' Taylor Broda 6-1, 6-0 on Friday. Despite the Puma's struggles this season, Gohil now has a impressive 9-9 overall record at #1 singles.
The Pumas travel to Kentucky to play GLVC opponents Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine next weekend.
