FORT WORTH, Texas -- Junior Nina Munch-Soegaard was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. The weekly honor is Munch-Soegaard's first for the 2009 season and third in her career.
Munch-Soegaard, a junior from Amarillo, Texas, tallied a 2-0 singles record at the ITA Indoor Team Qualifier in Atlanta, Ga. Playing in the top position for the Horned Frogs, 12th-ranked Munch-Soegaard topped No. 11 Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, the reigning NCAA Singles champion, (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) and also defeated No. 35 Katie Rybakova of Florida State in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
Alongside teammate Gaby Mastromarino, Munch Soegaard went 1-1 in doubles play, beating the Florida State tandem of Jessica Sucupira and Lauren Macfarlane, 8-6, and losing to Christy Striplin and Noelle Hickey of Georgia Tech, 8-5. TCU got off to a rough start against FSU and found themselves down early, 6-3. However, the pairing found their rhythm and manufactured enough momentum to steal five-straight games and clinch the doubles point with an 8-6 victory.
Munch-Soegaard and the Frogs will now prepare to host No. 25 Auburn this Sunday a 12 p.m. CT for the home opener this spring at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
