FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Nina Munch-Soegaard was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednessday. The honor marks Munch-Soegaards's second nod in as many weeks after nailing down TCU's first home win of the season with an exciting singles match with Auburn's Fani Chifchieva, ranked 6th in the nation.
Munch-Soegaard, a junior from Amarillo, Texas, defeated No. 6 Chifchieva in 21st-ranked TCU's 4-3 victory over No. 25 Auburn. With the match sitting a 3-3 tie, the final point came down to the No. 1 court. After dropping the first set (6-3), 12th-ranked Munch-Soegaard bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second set. Munch-Soegaard then jumped to a 4-1 lead in the final set, on the way to a 7-6 (6) victory, her fifth straight over a ranked opponent.
Alongside teammate Maria Babanova, Munch-Soegaard also collected a doubles win, as the 28th-ranked duo defeated Chifchieva and Whitney Chappell, 8-6.
TCU has now earned the league's weekly honor in every week of play since starting the season. Senior Macall Harkins garnered the glory after the opening weekend in Virginia, while Munch-Soegaard has clinched the award in back-to-back weeks. This week's accolade serves as the fourth in her career.
TCU (3-2) will return to action on Feb. 21-22, hosting North Carolina State and Miami (Fla.), respectively, at the Bayard. H. Friedman Tennis Center.
