LUBBOCK, Texas – The TCU women’s tennis squad dropped a heartbreaker at the hands of Texas Tech Thursday, falling by the score of 4-3 at the McLeod Tennis Center.
“It was a great battle today,” TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. “We fought really hard, took a 3-1 lead, and still fought really hard but just came up short. Texas Tech played a nice match.”
The Frogs (4-4) the match off on the wrong foot, as the Red Raiders swept through doubles action. The No. 13 doubles tandem of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska struggled from the No. 1 position, falling, 8-4, to Texas Tech’s duo of Van Der Drift/Garland, while Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa fell in the No. 2 spot to Peanna/Potgieter by a score of 8-6 to clinch the doubles point.
Sophomore Idunn Hertzberg put TCU on the scoreboard, opening singles action with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Peana, moving to 3-2 for the season. Harkins, ranked No. 85 in singles, followed with a three-set win from the No. 1 position, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to give the Frogs a 2-1 advantage.
Duncan rebounded after a rough first set from the No. 3 position to allow TCU to pull away to a 3-1 lead by defeating Simone Templeton, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. The newcomer from Winston-Salem, N.C., is now 4-2 in single in her inaugural campaign.
Sitting one point away from their fifth victory of the season and second-straight road win, TCU crumbled. The Frogs dropped the final three matches from the Nos. 2, 4 and 6 courts, including two in tiebreakers.
