UC Santa Cruz

The UC Santa Cruz Women's Tennis Team came away with the first Division III victory of the year on Tuesday afternoon.  The final score was 7-2 in favor of the Slugs over the Mules of Colby College.  Due to rain the match was moved indoors to Clubsport Pleasanton and it was great just to face some real competition after many missed matches due to weather.

The match was held on four courts so we began with the #1-4 singles matches.  The Slugs took an early lead as Megan Sweeney dominated for a 6-2,6-1 win at #4 singles, and Katie Frick quickly followed with a 6-4,6-1 win at #1.  Next off was Marjorie Youn who breezed to a 6-1,6-2 win at #6 singles.  With a 3-0 team lead, the final singles matches all went the distance.  Courtney Armstrong stepped up at the end to win a tough match 7-5 in the third set at #3 singles.  Erika Villalobos was primed to win at #2 singles with a 5-2 lead in the final set but her opponent kept fighting and saved numerous match points before emerging with a 7-5 win in the third.  Due to time restraints Angel Zabala was forced to play a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of her third set and she fought for a tough 10-8 win.  The clinched the match for the Slugs 5-1 and the team headed to the courts to try and squeeze in some doubles before we no longer had the courts.

Erin Ness and Courtney Armstrong dominated at #3, winning 8-1.  Megan Sweeney and Angel Zabala cruised to a 8-4 win at #2 , so the final match pitted two of the better teams in the country.  Katie Frick and Erika Villalobos battled back from a 5-2 deficit only to eventually fall 9-7 for their first loss of the year.  Overall it was a great effort from the entire team and should help build confidence for our trip down to Southern California.

The Slugs will be playing a doubleheader on Thursday at Occidental College.  First is Pacific Lutheran at 10:00 AM followed by Occidental at 3:00 PM

The spring break trip includes matches vs. Depauw on Friday at 2:00 PM at the Claremont Club,

Saturday at 9:00 AM vs. Williams at CMC and Sunday at 9:00 vs. Rhodes at the Claremont Club.  We look forward to seeing all our SoCal fans and thank everyone for their support.
