After day one of the Flower City Invitational Tennis Tournament, the Rochester men’s team has a 1-1 record. The Yellowjackets defeated Ithaca College, 5-3, then lost, 5-1 to Skidmore College. Matches were played to decision on Saturday due to rainy conditions. The Rochester points against Ithaca came in two of the three doubles events (#1 and #3), and three of the five completed singles events (#2, #4, #5). Brian Bowman and Patrick Sheehan were double winners for Rochester. Bowman won at #2 singles (6-4, 6-2) over Jimmy Newton. He paired with Ryan Kovaleski to win, 9-7, at #1 singles against Taylor Borda and Josh Rifkin. Bennett Peterson lost Rifkin, 6-4, 6-3, at #3 singles. Sheehan was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at #4 singles against Mike Muraco. Sheehan and Adam Crosby won third doubles, 8-1, against Dan Adelman and Dunnick. The fifth Rochester point was claimed by Brian Schmeer, a 6-2, 6-3 win at #5 singles against Adelman. Schmeer and Alex Magill lost, 8-5, to Newton and Muraco at #2 doubles. The sixth singles match, pitting Magill vs. Steve Odus did not finish. Magill won the first set, 6-2, and Odus was ahead, 3-4, in set two when it was abandoned. Kovaleski and Bowman took the first doubles point against Skidmore, but the Thoroughbreds won the other two doubles pairings and three singles positions to advance. Rochester’s top doubles pairing won, 8-3, against Carl-Eric Girardin and T.J. David. Magill and Schmeer lost at #2 doubles, Crosby and Sheehan were beaten, 8-5, at #3 doubles. In singles play, Kovaleski lost to Girardin, 6-2, 6-4. Peterson lost, 6-2, 6-3, at #3 and Sheehan lost, 6-2, 6-2 at #4. Bowman was ahead, 6-4, and tied at 1-1 in the second set at #2 when his match was stopped. The fifth and sixth singles events never got started.
