CANTON, N.Y. - The men's tennis team won both doubles divisions and one of three singles titles at the St. Lawrence Invitational over the weekend. Ryan Kovaleski and Brian Bowman paired to win the A Doubles Bracket. They defeated Jon Satkowski and Chris McDonald of SLU, 8-3, in the title match. The UR duo opened with an 8-3 win, followed it with an 8-4 triumph, then won 8-3. In the top half of the A Bracket, Brian Schmeer and Alex Magill won their opener, 8-5, then lost to Satkowski and McDonald, 8-5 in the semis. The B Doubles Bracket crown went to Daniel Barbash and Matt Volkov. They defeated Bennett Peterson and Adam Crosby, 8-6, in the title match. Barbash and Volkov opened with an 8-3 win, then won by default over St. Lawrence in the semis. In the top half, Peterson and Crosby won three matches - by 8-3, 9-7, and 8-3, to gain the final. Schmeer won the C Singles Bracket, defeating Volkov, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinal. He opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tom Bacon of Hamilton, then downed Ren Gates of SLU, 6-3, 6-1. Volkov knocked out Ben Caiella of Nazareth, 7-5, 6-1 and topped Jake Dexter of SLU, 6-1, 6-0, to get to the semi. Schmeer won the title when Chris Rodilosso of SLU retired. Magill won his first two matches in singles, topping Dan Matteo of Nazareth, 6-1, 6-2, the eliminating Barbash, 6-3, 6-3, in round two. He lost to Rodilosso in the semis, 4-6, 6-2, 7-10. Barbash secured an opening round win, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7, over Larry Hall of RIT. Patrick Sheehan reached the B Singles final, where he lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Nick Boltz of SLU. Sheehan had a first-round bye. He advanced to defeat Max Bogue of RIT, 6-2, 6-3, then downed Mike Moreno of Hamilton, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Peterson had a first round bye as well. He beat Mark Segal of Hamilton, 6-4, 7-5, then lost to Boltz, 6-3, 6-0, in the semis. SLU's Satkowski knocked out both Bowman and Kovaleski in his run to the A Singles title. Bowman defeated Drew Likin, 6-1, 6-1, in his first match. He lost to Satkowski, 6-4, 6-4, in round two. Kovaleski stopped Chris McDonald, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the first match. He eliminated Pete Abernathy of SLU, 6-1, 1-6, 11-9 in the second round, then lost, 6-4, 6-2, to Satkowski in the final.
