DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women’s tennis team improved its overall record to 2-0 with a 8-1 win over conference opponent St. Thomas on Sunday. The Eagle women showed no signs of fatigue as a result of playing three matches in three days, as they began their 2009 Sun Conference slate on a high note.
The Eagles received an early 2-0 advantage as St. Thomas forfeited at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions. ERAU got through the other two doubles matches easily as
Natasa Zoricic and Julija Stojkovska earned an 8-1 victory over Manuel Gil and Grier Clark and Mathilda Engstrom and
Hana Im down Natalia Ramirez and Adriana Montilla 8-1.
Sara Abraúl was the first to finish her singles match and clinched the Eagle win with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Montilla. Zoricic topped Gil 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, followed by Im who bested Ramirez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Marga Rico Jimenez won her first set against Clark, 6-4, and got the win when Clark elected to retire.
The Bobcats’ lone victory came at the No. 3 spot where Bridget Castillo topped Engstrom 6-4, 6-3.
The Eagles return to the court at noon on Thursday when they head north to take on Jacksonville University.
