SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach swept the top four singles matches to beat the rain and the Aztecs 4-2 on Friday afternoon. Playing singles first to try and beat an upcoming rainstorm, the 49ers locked up the match and were leading in doubles before the skies opened, shortening the contest.
In a matchup between the team’s two ranked players, Long Beach State’s No. 68 Hannah Grady got the better of No. 93 Julia Trunk, outlasting Trunk 7-5, 6-1 to get the match started for the 49ers. Deborah Armstrong and Rachel Manasse both cruised through the top half of singles, each winning 6-3, 6-2.
Anais Dallara then clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles over Milana Yusupov. Julie Luzar and Jessica Weeks fell in singles to account for the final score.
In doubles, Grady and Weeks were ahead of Trunk and Bagshaw 6-3, while Dallara and Manasse held a commanding lead over Cadua and Kitts 6-2. However, with the weather in the area, the match was unable to be completed. The 49ers still pick up the win due to the four singles wins however.
Long Beach State returns home to face Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference matchup next Friday at 2 p.m., and will play the rescheduled Cal State Fullerton match in Fullerton on Saturday, February 21.
