REDLANDS, Ca. – The 20th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler men’s tennis team picked up two key non-conference victories over the weekend to cap off their week-long spring break swing through California.
On Friday, the Patriots scored a 6-3 win over #30 Pomona-Pitzer, taking four of six singles points, including the top three, and winning at first and second doubles.
At No. 1 singles, senior Dustin Phillips improved his record to 15-2 with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 win over Pomona’s Cameron Taylor. Robert Sajovich won at No. 2 singles and David Ashlock took the No. 3 singles for UT Tyler. Shaun Maddox also won the No. 5 singles.
At first doubles, Ashlock and Phillips downed Pomona’s Taylor and Uday Singh, 8-4, while Sajovich and Andrew Reznik hung an 8-1 defeat on Pomona for the Patriots in the second doubles.
Saturday’s matchup against #13 Redlands proved to be more of a challenge as the Patriots needed the Ashlock/Phillips 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles to squeak out the 5-4 win.
Similar to Friday’s match, the Patriots won at first, second, third, and fifth singles. Sajovich scored the only straight-set victory for UT Tyler, downing Redlands’ Michael Reading by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
The two wins move UT Tyler to 9-3 on the season and the Patriots will return to Tyler to take on Birmingham-Southern on March 22.
