Seniors bring in Mountain West Conference weekly honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Lobo seniors Johnny Parkes and Ola Abou-Zerky have been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week. Parkes went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles action last week while Abou-Zerky led the Lobos to a 2-1 record at the Barnes Collegiate Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The distinction marks the fourth week Parkes has been named MWC player of the week this season, incuding collecting last week’s honor. This is the first for Abou-Zerky in 2009.

Abou-Zerky, a senior from Cairo, Egypt, started off the weekend with a loss against No. 36 Kristi Boxx from Mississippi, but bounced back, dominating UT-Arlington’s Monika Hadvigerova winning 6-3, 6-1. Abou-Zekry also defeated Northern Arizona’s Edit Suhajda, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 beating her second NAU player this spring season. At No. 1 doubles, Abou-Zekry teamed with Emma Hayman to beat Texas-Arlington’s Klara Jagosova and Daiana Negreanu (8-2) and Northern Arizona’s Suhajda and Orsi Golovics (8-7 [9-7]).

The wins earned Abou-Zekry 66 career singles wins, tying her with All-American Sandy Lukoski at the No. 15 spot for most career singles wins at New Mexico.

Parkes, a senior from Southport Merseyside, England, led No. 32 New Mexico (13-2) to victories over Northern Arizona (7-0) and Purdue (6-1). At No. 1 singles, Parkes tallied straight set wins over Northern Arizona’s Andrew Reiff (6-0, 6-2) and Purdue’s Slavko Bikelica (6-4, 6-4). He also teamed with Miles Bugby at No. 1 doubles to defeat NAU’s combo of Jacob Tracy and David Flodberg (8-4) and Purdue’s Bikelica and Griff Nienberg (8-2).

Parkes has won 16 straight singles sets, going eight straight matches without allowing his opponent a set, and is 14-1 on the spring season, 20-3 overall. Parkes and Bugby hold an 11-2 record for the spring. Parkes began the year 12-0 in singles and doubles.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams open up Mountain West Conference play this weekend. The Lobo men travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force, San Diego State and UNLV while the Lobo women return to San Diego, Calif., for matches with UNLV and San Diego State.
