BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No.2 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team swept the SEC’s weekly honors with senior Jonas Berg earning Player of the Week and freshman Marcel Thiemann being named Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
This marks the first time for the Rebels to sweep the SEC’s weekly honors and the first time for Berg to earn Player of the Week honors. Thiemann earned freshman of the week honors for the second time in his career. Ole Miss has now had a freshman of the week five times this season and two weeks in a row. Both players helped lead the Rebels to their best start in the SEC (8-0) since 1996 when they went 11-0 and won their first overall SEC Championship.
Berg went 3-1 in singles and doubles in wins over No. 13 Kentucky and Vanderbilt. He defeated the nation’s No. 5 ranked player, Bruno Agostinelli for his second win over a top 10 ranked player in the SEC and his highest win ever. With his win over Vanderbilt’s Vijay Paul, Berg improved to 8-3 at No.1 singles, 6-2 in the SEC. Berg is now 25-3 in the SEC for his career.
Thiemann went 2-0 against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, only dropping four games total. He clinched the victory over Vanderbilt to give the Rebels the 8-0 league start. Thiemann is 5-2 in the SEC.
The Rebels are on the road this weekend for a pair of matches. Friday, they will face LSU at 1 p.m. in Baton Rouge, followed by Arkansas in Fayetteville Sunday at 1 p.m.
