Univ. of Wisconsin, Whitewater Team Page
The tennis was very exciting as the Warhawks won their 20th consecutive WIAC match and 5th consecutive WIAC title as they beat UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, and UW-Eau Claire this past weekend and were able to celebrate a successful senior day on Saturday. Each match the Warhawks struggled out of the gates in doubles but found a way to get it done in singles to sweep the competition one more time. Since the Warhawks had not lost a conference match in four years, there was a target on their back and each of their rivals came out playing very strong.

On Friday the Action started against Oshkosh. At #2, Oshkosh played flawlessly taking our our team 8-1, and our #1 team struggled serving and dropped their match 8-5. Thankfully our #3 team took care of business keeping the match in reach. In singles the team won 5 of the 6 matches, including a thriller by Danny Glinert over Seth Breunig in a three set marathon! Kyle Halweg also won when called upon to step in at #6 as Mike Harmatys was out of the match resting his back.

Saturday morning started off very shaky. Half way through the doubles matches #1 doubles was down a break and #2 doubles and #3 doubles were each down two break each! Things looked gloomy. Had we lost all three momentum would have been tough to overcome and things could have been different. Just in time, however #1 and #2 turned things around, storming back at #1 for an 8-5 win and at #2 for a thrilling 9-8 win. This gave us a big lift and we used the momentum to take each of the singles matches in straight sets, include a nice win from Will Krieger as he stepped in at #6 with Harmatys still out of the lineup.

With UWW and UWEC each at 2-0, the final match of the weekend was for the WIAC final four championship. It did not disappoint. It was a battle from the beginning. At #2 doubles the Warhawks won pretty quickly, and at #3, EC won without too much trouble. This put the swing match to #1 where it was a battle back and forth. It was a battle of defense vs offense, as EC was lobbing each returning, but doing an amazing job of hitting their lobs within a foot of the baseline each time. It ended up frustrating the Warhawk duo a little too much on a sunny day and Eau Claire ended up with a 2-1 lead headed to singles. The team was still confident as their singles had been sharp all weekend, and we now had Harmatys back in the lineup. Harmatys quickly evened the team match at 2-2 with his quick win. Caiati and Mory each won in straigh sets while Moller lost in straight sets, so the team score was now Warhawks up 4-3, and needed Lowe or Glinert to pull out their matches. At this time, Glinert had just lost his first set, and Lowe had just split sets after coming back from an 0-6 opening set. At the start of the 3rd set someone told Lowe to show why he is our senior captain leader, and that's exactly what he did. He started with an early break, slowly extended his lead and then held on to win the first chance he had. All four of our seniors each accounted for a point, so they combined for 4 of our 5 points that we needed in this important match on Senior day.
Between matches we did honor our four seniors Mike Harmatys, Alex Lowe, Alex Mory, and Erich Palecek. Each of these seniors has had a stellar tennis career with us, but even more impressive they have all performed aboved the 3.25 Chancelor Scholar Athlete mark. They are a group of terrific young men that will be greatly missed for their play, charachter, and leadership. Thank you all for your amazing contributions.
