NEW ORLEANS -- The Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis team added to its season of stellar accomplishments when three Gold Rush players -- seniors Terry Richardson and Mike Green and freshman Steffen Giles-Osborn -- were in the final 2008-09 NAIA men's singles and doubles rankings on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Web site Monday.
Richardson was 28th and Green 35th in singles, and Green and Giles-Osborn were a season-high 12th in doubles.
Richardson is from Ellenwood, Ga., and Stockbridge High School. Green is from Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Barnabas Christian Academy, and Giles-Osborn is from Atlanta and Westlake High.
Green and Giles-Osborn were the first XU men's doubles team to earn an ITA national ranking. Giles-Osborn is the second Gold Rush freshman to earn a final national ranking, joining Miroslav Vukicevic (2003-04) in singles.
Previously only one Gold Rush player, Vukicevic, had made the ITA's final rankings.
Xavier was 17-7 this past season, winning the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive time in five years, tying a school record for victories and reaching the second round in the Gold Rush's first appearance at the NAIA National Championship. Xavier was the first HBCU men's team to qualify for the NAIA's national event since it adopted a dual-match format in 2000.
