TAMPA - The defending BIG EAST Champion University of South Florida men's tennis team kicked off its season Friday at the University of Virginia Invitational. The Invitational is a three-day event with matches taking place throughout the entire day.
Freshman Peter Frank won his first match as a Bull in the A1 singles flight when he beat Ugur Atalay from George Washington, 6-3, 7-6. The Bulls kept things rolling with junior Lucas Jovita and sophomore Wael Kilani in the A2 singles flight. Jovita started out his first match of the season down a set, but it was his come-from-behind win over Sander Gille of Eastern Tennessee State 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 that advanced him to the next round. Kilani played against Sven Vloedgraven of Binghamton on Friday in the A2 singles flight and ended up losing to him 6-4, 7-5.
Senior Thomas Estrada earned another win for the Bulls when he beat Zack Watson of Radford in the B singles flight, 6-4, 7-6.
The doubles pair of Jovita and Estrada also had a strong showing for the Bulls in Day 1 of competition. Jovita and Estrada topped Haig Schneiderman and Jonathan Wong of Columbia, 8-4, to advance to the next round in the A2 doubles flight.
Kilani and Frank competed together in the B1 doubles flight against Jonathan Wolff and Danny Kreyman of Wake Forest. Kilani and Frank fell to Wolff and Kreyman, 8-5.
Day 2 of competition at the University of Virginia Invitational is set to start today at 9 a.m.
