Five Crimson Tide netters to represent Alabama at Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women’s tennis team is sending five players to Auburn, Ala. to compete in the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championships this week. Play gets underway on Thursday, Oct. 22 and continues through Monday, Oct. 26. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Auburn, with all action taking place at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

“This is an excellent occasion to bring our best as there is much on the line at the Regionals including a trip to the 2009 ITA National Indoor Championships, said head coach Jenny Mainz. “We have been progressing effectively this fall season building with each tournament. Overall, we have improved individually and as a team. We had considerable opportunities at the ITA All-Americans as we were exposed to the nation’s best. This experience should help us.”

Seniors Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru, sophomores Courtney McLane, who is currently ranked 61st in singles, and Taylor Lindsey, and freshman Alexa Guarachi will all be representing the Crimson Tide in singles action. Guarachi and McLane, the No. 43 duo in the nation, will also be teaming up to compete in doubles, as well as the pair of Bigos and Lindsey. All players will be eager to get match play in this weekend, as the last tournament the team competed in was the ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Championships in Los Angeles took place three weeks ago.

“We need to be willing to work from the first point of the Regionals to the last ball hit,” added Mainz. “We have chances with three top 50 singles players and a top ten doubles team. We need to go in with a disciplined mindset and play solid, consistent tennis.”

Alabama will return home next week to host the U.S. Junior National Team on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
