Nedunchezhiyan earns No. 3 seed; two Husky freshmen set to debut.

SEATTLE – The first tournament of the year for the full Husky men’s tennis team is at hand, as the men head to Berkeley, Calif. this weekend for the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Cal hosts the event at the Hellman Tennis Complex from this Friday, Oct. 23 until Tuesday the 27th.

The tournament will gather more than 100 singles players from 14 Division-I programs on the West Coast and approximately 60 doubles teams to compete for the prestigious Regional title and a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships held next month. Among the teams in attendance will be Pac-10 powers Cal, Stanford, and Oregon as well as teams such as Fresno State, Sacramento State, and closer to home Portland, Gonzaga, and Eastern Washington.

Junior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, ranked 32nd nationally, is the third-seed in the singles draw and will have a first round bye. Three more Huskies received No. 17 seeds, assigned randomly to the top players remaining after the top-16 seeds were distributed. Senior Derek Drabble, junior Tobi Obenaus, and freshman Kyle McMorrow all earned No. 17 seeds.

McMorrow, a heralded freshman from Thousand Oaks, Calif. will be making his collegiate debut, as will fellow freshman Nick Tchernikov. Also entered in singles are juniors Alex Rosinski and Skyler Tateishi, and sophomore Matt Stith.

In doubles, Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow will team up for the first time and earned the draw’s No. 5 seed. Rosisnski and Obenaus are seeded ninth. Also teaming up will be Drabble and Tchernikov, and Stith and Tateishi.

Friday will feature the first two rounds of singles play, with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles on Saturday. The final rounds of both draws will be held next Tuesday.
